Total container turnover on the system of Russian Railways

The total container turnover on the system of Russian Railways (RZD) in 2009 fell by 21% to 1,915 million TEU. At that empty turnover fell by 17% to 701 thousand TEU, and that of loaded container – by 24% to 1,213 thousand TEU. Loaded export traffic offered support for the market by having grown by 1% to 421 thousand TEU. Also, empty domestic traffic remained – 533 thousand TEU.

Obviously, in comparison with the first half of the year most of the positions in the railway container traffic have increased. Although empty exports decreased by 16 % (against growth of loaded exports volumes it is becoming an obvious trend), loaded imports continued further down by another 2 percentage points.

A definitely a positive trend was noted – the reduction of traffic and income from non-standard small containers. In contrast to standard container traffic five-ton boxes turnover fell by 35% and the turnover of three-ton ones – by 31%. This brings hope that in several years all those containers of little use in logistics will be washed out from the market.
